The Cryptid Factor
Three best buddies - Rhys Darby, Dan Schreiber, and Leon 'Buttons' Kirkbeck bring you The Cryptid Factor - a podcast dedicated to all things weird that are yet to be defined by science.Since 2008 they have passionately (and often awkwardly) been discussing 'cryptids' and monsters like Yeti, Chupacabra, Bigfoot and Nessie - as well as weird news of the world, UFO's, Time travellers, robots and space stuff.Though they take these pseudosciences as seriously as they can, they struggle to take themselves seriously at all.Hosted by comedian and actor Rhys Darby, star of top rating podcast 'No Such Thing as a Fish' Dan Schreiber - and Pulling it all together is their best friend, 'Buttons'. If anything goes wrong, it is probably his fault. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

- #112 EdFringe LIVE Night Three IssueDec 1, 2025 · 33 min“If doesn’t go wrong, you haven’t seen us”
Welcome back to the Cryptid Factor Live in Edinburgh - Night 3!
In this show you will find a man who has LITERALLY taken his life into his hands, plants evolving into musicians on San Pellegrino diets, eye ball yoga, stereotypical evil villains bringing giant birds back to life (Jurassic Park style), Rhys sounding fish that refuse to die, and whale threesomes to finish us off…

- #111 EdFringe LIVE Night Two IssueSep 26, 2025 · 31 minNight two of the Edinburgh Fringe and the boys put whole jail house of stories behind bars.
In this rebellious issue we have backstage gatecrashing, psychic attacks, deceitful leggy leaves, cryptid impersonators, historically resentful house pets, a poorly pulled-off coattail theory theft and the tiniest noisiest cat-erpillar to ever be eye-witnessed.

- #110 EdFringe LIVE Night One IssueSep 4, 2025 · 41 minThe Edinburgh Fringe couldn't keep us out if they tried! And trust us...they did.
Kicking their second run off with a wobbly blast, the trio find their feet with tales of swampy airport crotches, poles flipping out on Santa, UAPs coming to scope out Earth, High School teachers leaving their special marks, and a thief busted by book too good to run away from.

- #109 The Heavy Lifting IssueJul 6, 2025 · 1 hr 12 minWith Rhys exhausted from his seemingly endless UK standup tour - Buttons and Dan gallantly decide to do the heavy lifting this episode, and although a wonderful offer, it's not long before the weight becomes too much to bear... for us all!
In issue you’ll find giant courting caves, dead dog clouds (and pizza), endangered hotel wake up calls, black icebergs complete with lazy code, an old man walks with lions, revenge of the birds... and stinky skin rust. Naturally. Enjoy the weight

- #108 The Animal Adjacent IssueJun 19, 2025 · 1 hr 13 minAfter the tangent filled 107 episode, It’s time for some top-tier tangent-free animal news! (With the disclaimer that 'tangent-free' excludes animal tangents - of which there are MANY!)
In this issue, we get answers to the burning questions that we never wanted the answers to, like which host is the funniest? Which host is most likely to survive in the wild? Who is most likely to tame a wild moose whist riding an ancient Moa? Obvious!
And, if you wade through this swamp of tangents long enough, you might just spot something that resembles content - such as a neck egg-laying giant snail, fresh Moose sightings in New Zealand, Mermaid’s purses spotted beneath an underwater volcano, Mouse Deer and Flying Squirrels going from extinct to extant as well as a Bigfoot eyewitness account thats fresh off the page!
Last and certainly least, theres a dog pushing their owner off a cliff, which leads to the world’s first ever live animal reenactment on a podcast! You don’t want to miss this one!

- #106 The P.S.A IssueMar 31, 2025 · 1 hr 5 minTHIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Please take note of the following warnings before proceeding into this issue.
TRIPPING HAZARD! Legendary 'Kappa' Hunter's flustered, loosey-goosey balls are rolling around freely in the streets of Japan.
BEWARE of Schreiber's Animal Husbandry! In light of animals now being able to talk to humans, please refrain from placing any hands on Dan's new LITERAL chick.
And REMINDER to check your call sheet number on today's episode of The Darby Truman Show (proudly brought to you by Name Brand cereal).
Also, in this disturbed issue, we have: murderous colleagues stranded in Antarctica, very quiet sounds in a Sasquatch hotspot (audiobook available now... please!), freshly generated footage of the morally questionable Mexican 'Chaneques' goblins, and a new three-day Bigfoot festival in Oregon—which hasn't even happened yet!

- #105 The Robot Host IssueMar 20, 2025 · 1 hr 9 minWell well well, let’s all give a warm virtual welcome to TCF's newest host! He’s so switched on, it’s almost like he’s made for it.
Although, we have enough host action going on to keep us entertained with just our regular three: We have a time travelling child host coming back to cosplay as other hosts, a normal travelling host on a mission to coat tail another host, and a celebrity host and a not-so celebrity host meeting celebrity non-hosts, giving celeb-envy to another host…host hosty hosts!
In this flotilla of information you will sail past the first Loch Ness Monster sighting of 2025, adorable wooly mice created by a whole company of genetically engineered employees, national cheesy naan crazes, and World-Record breaking vegetables making some oddly familiar noises.

- #104 The Gardening Angel IssueFeb 27, 2025 · 1 hr 4 minIn this flourishing issue, take a gander into the Great Glasshouse, wear a sash in the Seat-less Storeroom and dive deep into a Devalued Diary!
At long last, Buttons reveals the tease of his personal proof of the afterlife and Darbs may actually be one of many Darbs. We have kayakers being swallowed by whales, celebrities and side kicks being harassed by ghost children in haunted ships, and Bigfoot hunts with ex-girlfriends causing dramas in divorce courts.
Turns out the FBI might be tapping into your phone line from the comfort of your mothers bedroom, and for the first time ever, we have animals doing perfectly normal things in places they should be...you don’t want to miss this one!

- #103 The Or-Fish IssueFeb 4, 2025 · 1 hr 4 minMany say Oarfish are an omen for disaster about to strike - Well consider yourself warned! In this chaotic episode we have Dan battling with psychic abilities, crocodiles mimicking drowning humans, overwhelming feelings of being a mermaid and AI (quite rudely) requesting all humans to die...promptly followed by AI romance!
A fresh new book idea is brewing which is fitting as it turns out we are in the midst of the World Smartest Man AND the Stephen Fry of New Zealand and to top it all off, who doesn't love a good cliff hanger?

Also In here there's old men failing at reminiscing, Goonies Tridems, buried Mash, banned books on banned books, cheap top-secret Chinese military cartoons, free bee heaters, juvenile 'not-so-big' Bigfoot foot prints found, Turing test gets a pass, and the scariest sound of all time goes up against the loveliest sound of all time... and a Sasquatch caller!

- #092 The Trigger IssueMay 13, 2024 · 59 minHere we are again - in a scarily regular type fashion! In here theres there's your usual Schreiber wang-ons, Buttons blah-blahs & Darby breakdowns - but in amongst it all there's an ACTUAL EARTH RUMBLING! Also you'll find flying zombie salt shakers, flying spaghetti monsters, haunted swag dolls, Donald Duck call-ups, unlicensed cut-outs, mountain cover-ups, coat-tail ridings, quantum imaginary mates, cringy cameos and conscious shoes. - #091 The Neutral IssueMay 3, 2024 · 1 hr 15 min...aaaaand we're back! This episode sees Hollywood, the UK coast and a dodgy basement come together to bring you: a Texan sized underwater model anomaly, an earthquake predicting doomsday fish, and SpiceGirl singing humpback whale helping humans talk to aliens! Theres also in-mate dating apps, time travelling thespians, vortex ship size guest appearances, alien language outboard motors, hunting permits for Sasquatch along with badly punctuated Bigfoot "sightings". - 89: #089 The 2nd First IssueMar 4, 2024 · 59 minWell, here we are in 2024 - and while we wait for Ep88 to become hot enough to drop... we have for you here the second recorded episode to be released first (in typical Cryptid Factor confused fashion!) In it you'll find news of disappearing towers, Uri Geller blowing his own mind by remembering he saw aliens, lots of bugs up a Florida mans nose, a big cat sighted in Scotland and a Big Foot running on the slopes. Also Rhys auditions to be a Frank Phantom, Dans has tales of optical illusions from his front yard, and Buttons is in Melbourne at his very own gun-show. Enjoy!!
**TRIGGER WARNING** We talk about bugs up a mans nose... and it's not very pretty.

- 87: #87 The Late Night IssueDec 22, 2023 · 1 hr 25 minIn the last of the 'All Together in LA' series, Rhys kindly pops back from one of his many other dimensions to join a very tired Dan and Buttons in the task of stringing sentences together. In here you'll find an (almost) concise history of a Giant Rock and the people that lived under it, a dead Vampire lair dug up, a billionaire blood junkie, some taxidermied bird drones and some seagull and husband calling competitions. Also in fresh news - it turns out The Cryptid Factor is big in Belgium! Who'd have thought? Eet smakelijk!

- 86: #86 The Unforgettable IssueNov 28, 2023 · 1 hr 27 minHot on the heels of the last old episode, this new old episode is jam packed full of ancient chat… mainly about Button’s ancient (and very legal) ayahuasca ceremony, some ancient tree breasts, and Dan correctly predicting how long it would take to get this ancient episode out. Outside of that hot mess, there’s also scantily-clad deer-lickers, excited Swiftie forgetfulness, ejaculating nets, Instant coffee TV ad premonitions, Big foot sightings with red-eye reductions, Wolverine infestations in California, and a reduced prize for Nessie proof. Also, get ready for an ayahuasca fuelled Button’s Theory Time that proves at last that we’re all in a simulation…Oooooh!!!

- 85: #085 The Yay or Nay IssueNov 9, 2023 · 1 hr 25 minThe team are in Hollywood together and have organised a playdate with Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award winning film composer George Michael! (formerly known as Michael Giacchino). Also, seeing as Aliens won’t get out of the news of late, this is an Alien Special - with news of 8ft non-humans driving front-end loaders, loads of big UFO words in Congress, Highways performing cattle mutilations, a woman having hundreds of alien babies, UFO rodeos and teenage aliens stealing time travel machines to get cow tongues from the past for restaurants in the future. Also, Buttons gets his Theory scored… and let’s just say it didn’t get a 10/10. Enjoy!

- 82: #082 The Just Not Great IssueMar 7, 2023 · 59 minAt last the world has a chance to hear Episode 82 - although will they really want to? Despite being filled to the brim with Bear faces on Mars, Mystery Sausages in mailboxes, Predictable Asparagus Fortune-tellers, an Eyewitness Account of a Mothman sighting (complete with homemade spooky music)... it's just... well, not great. You be the judge!

- 81: #081 The Artificial Xmas IssueJan 5, 2023 · 1 hr 21 minIt's Christmas Eve and the team have managed to squeeze in one last session for 2022 - and despite Buttons trying to make this issue edit free to get it out for Christmas day... somehow edits became the main feature! In here we have for you a Cryptid Christmas Carol which sees Sasquatch Clause wreaking havoc. There's a UOP with a WWI Rocket up his de-militarised zone, nativity cows escaping down a river, a baby Nessie on a beach, a couple of bullsh*t ghosts trying to get into Cryptid Buzz, a pay-it-forward beer sponsorship scheme as well as a winning lottery number time-travelling intuition broadcast scheme. Oh, and almost forgot - an AI chatbot writes us a full movie script (complete with predictive movie posters) where we save the future with some Cryptid 'Factor'. Happy Holidays!

- 80: #080 The Irreversible IssueDec 9, 2022 · 1 hr 32 minWell here we go again! This epically long 80th episode sees the Intro become an outro, Buttons Theory Time become a right royal tea-bagging, there’s a creepy UFV and a USV, Deadpool is busy killing fish, there’s a reincarnated octopus as a football fortune-telling ferret, there’s a hunt for a big bird, Jeremy the Sasquatch ghost clown has been spotted, Vocalisations makes a comeback… then there’s the christian rock-band and Bigfoot 911 call remix! Oh, and apparently Dan has a book out called ‘The Theory of Everything Else’ that he’s like you to subtly know about… Enjoy!

- 79: #079 The Interrupted Issue (part 2)Oct 16, 2022 · 32 minAt last, you get to hear how the interruption was concluded! Was it worth the wait? Hmmmm, that's a tricky one. Are you into Krodel Park Shuttle services? Extant Tasmanian Tigers? Short-legged Bigfoot? Canoe hire taxidermy? Then perhaps it is! Also, Dan's book is out (Yay!) and Buttons revolts against Rhys' attempt to keep his editing to schedule. Hence the massive delay in getting this to you. Buttons!!

- 78: #078 The Interrupted Issue (part 1)Sep 20, 2022 · 56 minThis incomplete issue is completely full of complete madness - including Nostradamus and his snow globes, Haunted books evaporating, Rumpology reports in, LA jetpack balloons, some Pulitzer surprises, a dead robot spider and Aliens going through trash caught on camera. Also, Dan writes Rhys's book of wisdom and Buttons records from his Moms (haunted) house. Total incomplete Madness - Part 2 to follow!

- 76: #076 The Stood Up IssueJul 12, 2022 · 1 hr 12 minButtons and an exhausted Rhys are in Boston after his tour - so for this episode Rhys decides to take a back seat... or at least he tries to. But with Dan trying to chat to a tarot reading president's granddaughter, a seagull attacking a fishing coach, the NZ public watching poop, 2 x new moon craters, 2 x astrophysicists, lots more Stranger synchronicity Things and a 'That's a recap' and 'Buttons Fairy Time' squeezed in for good measure... I can't imagine Rhys will be in that back seat for long!
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
- 75: #075 The Loud and Vocal No IssueJul 8, 2022 · 59 minIn here there's animals scared of fruit, UFO hunters hunting doors, Alien hunters (possibly) hearing signals from space and an old black knight that's a long way from hoooooome. Also Rhys has news of a dead giant tuna, Buttons is angry at a newspaper and Dan launches a mission to bring back an Australian Elephant man. Oh, and Henry Hotspur... you get some preemptive (and possibly unwanted) sponsorship!
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
- 74: #074 The Padding IssueJun 27, 2022 · 1 hr 14 minIn this issue Buttons gives his masterclass on padding - which is so good that even the internet takes up the skill. There's busy exorcists and satan himself rating apps, Mona Lisa gets cake on her face and Rhys gets a LinkedIn.
Also in this ep - Dolphins don't get memories from dolphin-piss, whales do get mistaken for monsters by showing their bits and Buttons don't want you to buy his old Alien book.
Oh, there's also some meagre scratchings at some Cryptid news too... but it's all pretty lame... but at least we're honest!
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
- 73: #073 The Synchronicity IssueJun 20, 2022 · 1 hr 19 minThis issue is packed with synchronous happenings at the Erich Von Däniken and Sphinx Eyes magnitude! Buttons shares a long story about a short visit to a UFO symposium where he encountered a Loyal Brown Pet in a beat up Porsche. There's news of robot goo, robot goats and robot cryptid food deliveries.
Also - Rhys has reports of a Turkey sighting from a Squatch hunter, Dan's found a video of Cousin It pretending to be a hand-standing skunk and Buttons has exciting sports news!

- 72: #072 The Alleged IssueJun 13, 2022 · 1 hr 5 minAaaaaaaaand we're back!!!
This episode begins with a recap on xmas presents then quickly moves onto old pubs closing, spoon benders PR attempts, artefacts found in ice caves in Antartica, fish driving cars and making 90's techno noises.... and hitchhiking dogs (allegedly).
Also, Rhys and Buttons make a plea to be adopted by Dans dreaming Dad, there's a tree swinging Aussie Dogman, a psychic Wimbledon Nessie, and a tiny-tiny Mothman. Enjoy!
**NB - This episode was originally recorded back in January 2022, but was thought to be lost to the ravages of bad audio (and bad organisation), but with the help of a wonderful Cryptid Knight (Shout out to Jen Jones!) it's alive!
**NB - This episode was recorded before the war broke out in Ukraine. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by that tragedy.

- 71: #071 The Belated Christmas IssueJan 12, 2022 · 1 hr 7 minDue to Buttons being busy having a southern hemisphere summer holiday, this Christmas special clearly is well late (which he apologies for profusely) but it's worth the wait - not least due to the amazing ____________*1 as well as the ____________*2!
In here you'll find news on time travelers from Mars, theoretically Anthrax ridden conspiracy theorists and auto-replicating Pacman-esque xenobots made from frog cells... in a dish non the less! Also; some new Bigfoot footage from Georgia along with some old footage from a cowboy, alien bases below the ice, an expletive ridden speed sighting and a Jelly fish with 30ft mouth-arms... or is it arse-hands... you decide!

- 70: #070 The Pick-a-Path IssueDec 7, 2021 · 1 hr 6 minWelcome to Ep 70 where we try and 'choose our own adventure' through segments and end up picking a bad path. No doubt you'll find yourself just as confused and lost as we were. In the mess we somehow manage to cover multi-crash planes, almost crashed ISS space station, recaps on birds and marriages, a UK bigfoot and the hatching of decades old dormant underground shrimp eggs. Also, Dan levels-up to 'premiere grade' whilst Buttons levels-down to a 'back-sider'.
*New Segment alert* Weird animals doing strange things! (the animals are normal, what they do is weird). First episode covers Bovine hydro-slides and Possum kidnappers.... as in, it's the nasty possums doing the 'napping!!

- 69: #069 The Challenging IssueNov 12, 2021 · 57 minWe're back! After a long break from the shortest season ever (of 1 episode), we bring you EP 69 where you'll find a bunch of terribly challenging awards, hippos challenged to be human and a magic museum thats a challenge to find. There's also challenging news of Nessie sonars and Mamophants. To be quite honest though, the most challenged things in this ep are simply the three rusty hosts. Thanks for enduring this mess with us!

- 68: #068 The Come Back Special - Bumper IssueSep 15, 2021 · 1 hr 30 minAn incredible 'Schreiber Unveil' was meant to see this episode be all about the phenom of ‘Past Life Experiences’, but as per usual, we just couldn't stay on task - so now this episode also includes the art of 'No Blink' and 'Light Cry' acting, Coast Guards with hamster wheel problems, and experts who will never reply to Buttons ever again. Oh, and some zombie fish and stolen penises thrown in for good measure.
Enjoy the extra 30mins it took to get that all in!

- 67: #067 The Buzz Bingo IssueAug 10, 2021 · 58 minEp 67 has some great finds in it - Dan finds the Alien Sex capital of the UK, Rhys finds a nazi tank in a basement, and Buttons finds the elevator service hut in Superman's Building. We also shoe-horn in a Jet-pack Re-cap, a Fairy/Theory Time, a Rapisode Sandwich and a Sci-fi Robot Rangers Prequel - before the 'quel' is even quelled!

- 66: #066 The Quoting IssueJul 29, 2021 · 1 hr 13 minIn this ramshackled episode, Rhys fails to deliver Rapisodes, Dan fails in health and Buttons fails to be articulate. Also you'll find a kidnapped Nanna raised by Monkeys, AI Robots meeting Aliens, and Elon predictions from 1953. Also a Bigfoot crossing a river carrying a deer or two babies and a big(ish) cat let loose by a pig buddy. Enjoy!
