Born in Yuma, Colorado to Vernon and Wanda (Bracelin) Wegner, Larry began his musical life in grade school, playing organ in church and piano at home while his mother Wanda danced alongside and cheered him on. After playing the music halls of the eastern plains, he went on to study at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he mastered trombone and served as Drum Major and trombonist for the CU Men's Marching Band. Larry then toured nationally and internationally for six years with entertainer Al Fike in the Al Fike/Larry Wegner Show, performing on a variety of instruments and as a vocalist. In 1969 he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a rehearsal pianist, musical coordinator, and director โ including as resident pianist and musical coordinator for the original Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard. In 1976, Larry returned to the road, touring with the Broadway production of Hello Dolly and on promotional tours nationwide for Transtar and Frontier Airlines. In 1978, Larry launched a successful second career in art and design, working across Denver and Dallas as a design coordinator, graphic designer, shop owner, magazine creator, artist, and writer. He wrote for over two decades for the Rocky Mountain Business Journal and Out Front Colorado, and became a respected figure in the Denver art community for his bold landscapes and abstract paintings and drawings. Throughout it all, Larry never stopped playing. He performed for many years at The Grand Bar and The Brown Palace Hotel, and in 2009 became the resident vaudeville pianist for Naughty Pierre's Burlesque and Comedy Extravaganza at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret on the 16th Street Mall โ beloved for his unique arrangements, extraordinary range, and irrepressible spirit. Larry wrapped up his performing career in 2020 and spent his final years painting and drawing daily, living happily in the mountains near Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
