ACTING FOR IMPROV: The difference between a good scene and a great scene is whether you make the audience give a shit. John's workshop focuses on how to do that. Through a melding of improv structure and classical acting techniques John will provide you with tools to help you get out of your head and into your power as a performer. Exercises will show you ways to add depth to your scenes through emotional honesty, vulnerability, and spontaneity, and how to confidently make bolder choices on stage to elevate your work and turn what's funny into something sublime. John Conroy teaches Improv & Acting at the Pack Theater in Los Angeles and is an actor, producer, director, writer and communications specialist. He’s been performing, teaching and coaching improvisational comedy for over 20 years. His extensive training includes iOWest, UCB, The Groundlings, Second City, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and Viewpoints technique with trans superstar Alexandra Billings. John can be seen every month with Big Yellow Taxi (one of the longest running improv comedy shows in LA) and the improvised Tennessee Williams troupe Downtown Menagerie. He created the award-winning The Dick and The Dame: Improv Noir alongside his longtime comedy partner Stacy Rumaker, and is known for shows ranging from the avant garde WPCK to the outrageous Scumbag Shakespeare. John’s stage play The Rotten State received critical acclaim, and he starred in and directed numerous seasons of the celebrated PL.A.Y Noir. His work as a writer spans television to narrative video games (including one based on the works of Jane Austen). John’s film credits include the dark comedy Typecast: The Rise & Fall of Boingman, the action thriller Brick, and the sexy mystery Just Business (which he also co-produced). As far as he knows John is the only actor who’s played both Bruce Wayne and Jason Vorhees. Offstage John is a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, doggie daddy, music nerd, gamer, and lover of travel, “proper football” and mezcal.
